Tour Programme
  • We take a minibus from Çanakkale down to the site of Troy. The trip takes 25 minutes each way. The tour of the site lasts about one hour. Most visitors find this quite adequate. We usually do a short stop at one other location on the way back in order to enjoy the majestic views of the historic Dardanelles Straits. The cost includes air-conditioned minibus, professional guide, and entrance fees.
Itinerary
  • The story of Troy is part-mythology and part-archaeology. Where does the legend stop and history begin? It involves larger-than-life figures like the heroes from Homer's Iliad: Achilles, Helen, Paris and Hector, not forgetting the rascal Schliemann, who stole its treasure. The Trojan War is a dramatic story of bravery and deceit, one that has influenced European literature since its very beginnings. Highlights of the tour include:

    • The huge wooden Trojan Horse at the entrance (you can climb inside it).
    • The Visitors' Centre set up by the archaeologists, who you will see excavating around the site in July and August.
    • City walls dating from Early Bronze Age up to the Romans, in all, nine different settlements.
    • Fortification walls from Troy VI, the legendary Troy, an engineering miracle of its age that has endured 3,000 years.
    • The Temple of Athena, with a splendid view over the plain where the Trojan and Greek warriors once fought.
    • The spot where Schliemann supposedly found 'Priam's Treasure', which he smuggled away and eventually ended up in a museum in Moscow.
    • Stone altars where the priests sacrificed animals to appease gods and goddesses.
    • The Odeon and Senate - places of entertainment and oratory where musicians played the harp and debates took place.
    • After the tour, there is a tea break where you will have the opportunity to buy souvenirs before the trip back.
Benefits of Taking a Tour
  • Doing it yourself may sound more adventurous but there are several things you should bear in mind. First of all, you have to navigate your way from the centre of Çanakkale to where the village minibuses depart. This may involve some waiting. After arriving at Troy, the minibus will drop you off at the entrance kiosk, so you still need to walk to the site itself. Information boards are placed around the site at key points, but isn't it more fun to have a guide explain everything? And, most importantly, the last minibus back to Çanakkale leaves at 5.00 pm. If you miss that then you're left to your own devices. A Wilusa guided tour saves you all this trouble. No waiting, no worries!
Frequency of Tours
  • We do daily tours during the season as long as there are enough persons is signed up. Some days the tour may not go.
